Great Weather for Ducks!

Click Photo to Enlarge

Well, California has need the rain. Southern California has needed the water so that the golf courses and lawns won't dry up. Get ready Southern California: Here It Comes! The stream in my backyard has overflowed. Though the rain was supposed to abate today, it definitely has not. More rain on the way! The ducks are happy!

Bone

Click Photo to Enlarge

Okay, so this is not the most creative shot. But, I have been wanting to post this unique coffee table center piece for a while. This is one of the vertebrae in the spinal column of a whale - I believe I was told it was a Gray Whale. It sits on the magazine table in the waiting room of my orthopedic spine surgeon. My doctor's name is Dr. Noel Goldthwaite, and he is one of the physicians at the very prestigious Spine Care Medical Group in Daly City, CA, near San Francisco.

The Honor System

About 20 miles out of Red Bluff, on a two lane country road, sits this little egg stand. Purchases are on the honor system. You take your eggs and leave your money. What a concept!

Ford

Click Photo to Enlarge

Way out in the middle of nowhere, a 1934 Ford (I think it was a 1934) came driving by real slow. It had four suicide doors. I was taking a picture of something else, but I swung my tripod around and snapped two good photos. My cat Lupe' cropped it for me. Honest! She was laying on the keyboard and this is what happened. I liked the crop so I just kept it.

I met Mitch today carving with his chainsaws by the side of the road.

This is some of Mitch's finished work. He prefers to carve with either Cedar or Pine.

Mitch is a Smoke Jumper by profession, so he is used to using chainsaws and working with wood. He carves during the "off season."

From what I could tell, Mitch was working with three separate saws, all three of them Stihls.

The carving he was working on when I showed up was a racoon. It's beginning to take shape here as he works.

If you are in the area, be sure to visit Mitch in his tent during the Home and Garden Show at the Redding Civic Auditorium, March 8 & 9.

Every Sunset Is Unique

Click Photo to Enlarge

This is the second sunset I have posted this year, and I will probably post more in the future. Every sunset is unique. I had a feeling that the sunset this evening would be really special, and it was. This shot was taken from a hill near my house.

Tehama County Courthouse

Click Photo to Enlarge
For some reason, I thought the Red Bluff Courthouse would be open on Sunday. I knew there wouldn't be any business, but I was expecting the doors to be open. Dah!

I have been wanting to photograph this beautiful building, and I was undeterred. I had to shoot this photo of the staircase through the glass double front doors. I used a polarization filter to eliminate glare, and there definitely was some. I reduced the backlighting in Lightroom to a tolerable level.

I will probably photograph more of this building on a different day. It's very pretty architecturally, inside and out. I'm sure there are lots of opportunities if I return on a day they are open. But then there will be people. But who knows, maybe people will make it more interesting?

Wild Sacramento River - BLM Land

Click Photo to Enlarge
The Sacramento River as it exits BLM land between Red Bluff, CA, and Cottonwood, CA. This is perhaps my favorite part of the river to fish for King Salmon during the Fall.

My first trip on the river was over 25 years ago. I drove up from Orange County, caught two very large King Salmon, and I knew I had to move here. Though it has been a few years since I have fished for Salmon, I am hoping that life will soon afford me the opportunity to fish again.

The snow topped mountain in the upper right is Mount Lassen. It has been a very dry couple of years, but a few days ago we received rain. Prior to last week, Lassen was devoid of snow.
